  • Not a fan of the new format and all the ads…

    One of the recent updates took away the “Web” view and “Smart” view buttons at the top of the page. The “Smart” view allowed you to read the article without advertisements. Now there’s no option. You have to read the articles with ALL the advertisements (that no one pays attention to, anyway). These advertisements continually freeze up the article and chew through my battery life. It’s very frustrating.

    I generally like this news app. I like the variety of views and sources. The main problems are: 1) performance gets terribly slow after a bit I think trying to load so many images and ads, (have to exit the app and restart to get performance back) 2) it is frequently popping up a blue bar saying “new articles” and you can’t turn it off. Have to start over to get rid of it. 3) I understand forced ads because that’s how you make money - but we have to find the countdown and the x to quit the ad in different places and it’s just annoying. Just be consistent.

    Ads literally imposed over news articles make them unreadable. Don’t waste you time using this app. On top of that it causing my iPad problems. Seems filled with glitches. My iPad stops responding after 3 or 4 articles. I end up having to reboot it. FYI if an ad interrupts my reading I make a note to NEVER use the product advertised. EDIT… just so you know, Smart News, every time you throw an ad up I close the app. And tell someone, whoever, that their spelling is atrocious when they repost articles on your site. Absolutely ridiculous for journalism.

    I use this app everyday and yet now it is becoming unusable. The problem is happening on my iPhone and both iPads. The app does seem to require and unusual amount of memory to function. It is the only app on any of my devices that consistently freezes up and often suffers very long delays when simply opening an article. I always keep it updated, but it has only gotten worse. I hope you find a solution as I’m no longer able to suffer through using this app.

    (1) For my reading efficiency show stories in chronological order: newest to older. As is, I may see a 1-week old story listed 2 screens *before* an 8-hour old story. I have better things to do than scroll around looking for newer stuff! (2) I spent two hours this morning trying to cull out categories not needed. After a while the app became fitful and jerky on scrolling and on switching topics. I was able to resolve the problem by restarting the app and rebooting my iPad. This should not be required! I think my culling is finished for now, so this may no longer be a problem *for me*. But it could be something to which the developers should devote attention! Hence not 5 but just ★ ★ ★ ★

    I commented about a month ago about all of the garbage tabloid “news” in this app. I have tried using the “see less” buttons for a month with no impact. I’m deleting this mess and looking for something better. Update: I switched to Ground News which has far better sources.

  • We need the option to remove tabloids and propaganda

    I love the idea of a news aggregator, but when it includes obvious tabloids or garbage rags that don’t even try to practice journalistic integrity, we need to option to hide or delete those sources. If SmartNews can offer “don’t show me articles on this topic” option, as they do, it shouldn’t be hard to offer a “don’t show me articles from this source” option. I have one I have reported & flagged multiple times and it’s still on my feed daily. Those options are ignored. They don’t work. We should also have the option to flag obvious propaganda and misinformation to have it removed.
