  • Thankful For Filmic Legacy Version

I was miffed, to say the least, when I discovered that the Filmic Pro app that I had previously purchased had been changed to a subscription model. As far as I could tell, I could not download or send pre-recorded videos to my camera roll (among other previously available features) unless I paid for a fairly expensive subscription. It might be worth it to professionals or content creators, but I’m a casual user for personal purposes. More than a year after this discovery (after which I had stopped using the app for obvious reasons, but luckily didn’t delete it because I didn’t want to lose my videos), I went back to read the reviews of others in the same boat. The developers responded to some of those reviews with instructions on how to download this legacy version (for those who had previously purchased the original app) and move previously recorded video files from the Filmic Pro file folder to the newly created Filmic Legacy file folder on my iPhone. There is even a tutorial video of the file transfer process. So my app (Filmic Legacy now) is completely functional again, and I have complete access/control of my videos, including downloading or sending videos to my camera roll. I knocked off one star because this information, as far as I know, was never sent to those who had previously purchased the Filmic Pro app. I was just lucky enough to discover the legacy version on my own. Hopefully, this review will help others.

As with most good business models this one has come to an end. This is no longer the app you knew and loved it has been sold. I believe it is called an, exit strategy. The next step is to extract increased revenue at the expense of its prior reputation through predatory and hidden methods. Goodbye Filmic.

  • One of the worst apps I’ve ever used

I can't begin to say how furious I am with this app. First - it's supposed to let you shoot 4k video from 2 cameras on your iPhone - except it crashes 100% of the time, so I had to shoot 1080. Second: Picutre in Picture - a useless feature - since one is already shooting with two cameras it's just better to do PiP manually IF you need it, because this app likes to slip from discrete mode (2 separate files) into PiP - the problem there is they look EXACTLY alike when you are shooting. If they would put split screen between the two modes, then you'd at least know when you slip from DIscrete to Split Screen. But it really needs the ability to completely shut off modes you don't use. I just shot a concert I traveled 10,000 miles round trip to attend and half my files came out PiP rendering them 100% useless! Third - it lacks the ability to save default lens settings, which it REALLY needs. The app is buggy, and awkward. Avoid this like the plague.

It’s never a good feeling to open an app that you paid for the “pro version” a few years ago, only to discover key and even essential features are locked behind a subscription. We’re talking features like changing the resolution and frame rate, things you can natively do on Apple’s camera app. As a business man and a filmmaker I completely understand the change to a subscription based model, but at a minimum I think those key, even necessary, features should not be locked behind a paywall, and as someone who thought they had purchased the “premium version” it doesn’t feel good. Regardless, the user experience is king at the end of the day for any app, and until they unlock those certain key features I don’t feel able to leave a higher review on this app, no matter how qualified the features are. The app is fantastic and well featured, but the execution of this latest change was not clear, and does not feel good for the user. Changes need to be made, and the customer base will respond.

At least once a week, I wish I could use this app again; or at least get the money back I originally spent on it. Cant believe it’s legal to change/ restrict access to something after you’ve already sold it to someone.
